Midwife Program
During one of our early trips to Gandou, we learned that the majority of the women there give birth in their homes. There were only a few midwives in the area and these women were all elderly and did not have any formal training. After this trip, we began funding a midwife training program. Thirty women, representing most of the 19 sections of Gandou, were enrolled. A nurse trainer from Port-au-Prince has been coming to Gandou during the week for the training. Each round consists of 40 classes. They are currently beginning the final round of classes. The women will be certified midwifes at the end of the training.
